Woman's Best Friend

Just like any other woman in this planet, diamond is considered as something very precious as diamond is in the category of a precious stone. The shine that it reflects from every side seems to blinded everyone to race to get them. Perhaps because I live in a country without a huge diamond mines I don’t have to experience such brutality like the children in Africa who are taught of violence since they were at young age. The movie “Blood Diamond” shows the brutality happens in African diamond mine; the view of violence is everywhere. Ed Zwick’s movies always been a blast, and this time, he did it again. The set in Sierra Leone during the 1990’s civil war was made perfectly and which made this movie very captivating and it feels like I am involved in the real scene. My favorite character was actually Jennifer Connelly, because she was so eager to write and report about what is going on in the real world whereas people in the other side of the country might not really know what is going on behind their diamond jewelries. In terms of movie criteria, “Blood Diamond” is a movie that is packed with drama, action and adventure, thus, for the audience this is a very entertaining and educative movie. From this movie I learn of how people in Africa really suffers a lot from poverty until they are willing to risk anything to race for the price, just like how Vandy just want to live a simple life with his family. Again and again, I would say that this movie is a must see movie because of the actors, cinematography, the story itself and most of all is the main theme of the movie. Thus, as a woman who takes diamond as my best friend, perhaps now I would think twice and think that my diamond is more than just a precious stone.

Blood Diamond

Diamond had caused slavery and war in South Africa. The civilians were dragged to work as forced labor only to give their home treasures to foreigners, to white people. They suffered and died while the white people prospered and wealthy. During that time, an African named Solomon Vandy was cruelly separated from his family because of the rebels called RUF that come to his village. He was separated from his family when the RUF caught him and forced him to work as a slave in a diamond mine. Fortunately, Solomon was succeed to hide a very big diamond he found at that mine and escaped from the mine but did not have a chance to bring the diamond with him. Bad for him, the commandant of the RUF retaliated him by kidnapping his son. He started his journey by trying to look for his family. Along his journey, he was then accompanied by Danny Archer, a diamond smuggler and Maddy, an American journalist. They were going through different goals which were related to one another. Solomon was looking for his son, Archer was looking for the diamond Solomon hid, and Maddy was looking for facts happened behind the war. While do the journey as a team, they learned a lot of things about life, friendship, love and sacrificing. After facing a lot of obstacles along the journey, they were finally succeeded in finding Solomon’s family and the diamond. Unfortunately, the victory costs Archer’s life when he was shot while struggling for the diamond. Solomon did not waste the death of his friend, he and Maddy worked together and told the world the true story that beyond the prosperity of Von de Cop –a diamond company– were suffering and death of Africans.
